Posted: 04 Nov 2011 06:25 AM PDT Drill & Sanctimony by Peter Anthony Paul Sprungli. Overweight. Opinionated. Obsessed with video games and war movies. In U.S. Army basic training, he connives, eats, and bumbles through ten weeks, running a contraband market, exploring religions, and facing military justice from the diminutive Drill Sergeant Pint. Bunking with Sprungli is an exemplary soldier who succumbs to the most trying element of the modern U.S. Army’s co-ed training environment: falling in love. Sprungli becomes the courier of notes, until he learns to doctor the messages and bring Drill Sergeant Pint into a fraternizing love triangle. A military comedy for the 21st century.

Posted: 04 Nov 2011 06:20 AM PDT Survival by Ronald Goulden When disaster strikes, there are only three types of people: victims, predators, or survivors. By their very nature the criminal element in our society are poised to assume the predatory role. This implies that the vast majority of the civilized population must make a conscious decision to be a victim or to survive. Lack of planning and foresight automatically relegates a huge percentage of society to the role of victim. With just a little planning and awareness, individuals can change their potential lot in life from victim to that of a survivor. Again, intent of this book is to help individuals prepare to survive disruptions in our modern society. The reader will not find all of the answers in this book; perhaps you will find no answers in this book. I hope that this book will point some in the direction of survival. Again, this is not written as the definitive survival manual, much of what you read will be suggestions that may not be applicable for every situation. With a little luck, no one will ever have to use the advice of this book to survive a disaster. That being said, many experts expect a nuclear device to explode on American soil within the next few years. The concept of this book is based upon total societal collapse, with little or no hope for restoration of life as we know it. Many people will read this and immediately discard it as ‘rubbish’ since it is in opposition with their beliefs. Hopefully, others will read it and say, ‘Hmmm.’

Posted: 04 Nov 2011 06:11 AM PDT Early Railways by Ciamar Price This e-book contains three short essays designed as introductions to their topics. The Surrey Iron Railway, the first public railway in the world. Predating commercial steam engines, it was horse-drawn and made from cast-iron instead of steel. Rendered obsolete by the advent of steam engines, the route it ran through is still in use. The South Devon Railway, designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel and driven by atmospheric pressure instead of standard steam engines or horses. A brief overview of the North Star, built by Sir Daniel Gooch and Isambard Kingdom Brunel, the first Broad Gauge engine which eventually outlived the broad gauge network and was the last surviving broad gauge engine. In addition, four other famous steam engines are mentioned at the back as ideas for class projects or personal research.
